Damn!

I just found out that One Piece has been playing on Fox on Saturday mornings at 9:30am!

I could be watching that. It's a kooky, cute anime with pirates. I could be watching pirate anime! But I didn't even know it was on! Damn. I didn't even know it'd been liscenced and dubbed already.

Why didn't anyone tell me when stuff like this happens?

No one told you because the dub is baaaaad. Baaaaaaaaaad. Scaaaary scaaaary baaaaaaaaaaaaaaad. And this is coming from me, who LOVES dub. So bad that the fansub people are still treating "One Piece" like an unlicensed series in their releases...

Really?

. So bad that the fansub people are still treating "One Piece" like an unlicensed series in their releases...

That IS bad.

But then again, this is Fox we're talking about. The indescribable things they did to the first half of Escaflowne to try to turn it into a kiddie anime (which it SO is not in a million YEARS) before they quit airing it entirely... I believe Fox capable of any atrocity regarding anime, I'm sad to say.

I watched the first 6 episodes or so, and I have the first 3 volumes of the manga. I've always been interested in more, but no bittorrent and all.

What are you doing up so late/early?

No, episode 21--the speed-sub from Shinsen. It totally broke me.

Don't worry, I'll YouSendIt to you and you can get the non-crappy-subtitled version from AnimeU.com later. :)

Only real nitpick I had was that this ep had a different art director, which meant Sara looked unrecognizable (not good) and everything else, while not really bad, looked darker and more raw and less intensely pretty than usual. Which upon re-watching I'm not minding as much, because I think it suits the tone of the story.

Thank you!

If AnimeU has a better one up later I'll send it, but last week they just had the SS one. But this site might end up having the AnimeForever version sometime soon.

Oh, thanks, but I can get the AnimeForever one off Bittorrent myself whenever it shows up. :)

YES! GO FIND HIM MUGEN! GO! GO!

... You were right... the art is really weird in this episode. Almost distorted and simplified. Watery.

I screamed when Jin appeared again. I thought he was really dead or that we wouldn't see him again for a while because he'd been captured or something. OMG JIN!!

(Fuu. She threw herself in front of a sword for him. He screamed at her to keep away! And she threw herself in front of a sword for him!)

All that stuff in my previous comment? I yelled aloud to my computer in my empty dorm room. Literally.

(Fuu. She threw herself in front of a sword for him. He screamed at her to keep away! And she threw herself in front of a sword for him!)

I adored that scene. Mugen has NEVER had someone do that for him, you know it. He probably didn't even believe people capable of it.

But I loved that scene, and this whole episode. For reasons that tie into my shipperdom with this series, in an odd way. See: I like both ideas for shipping but I lean towards Fuu/Jin... but I also have this feeling that shipping is a fun distraction only, because that's not what this series is about at all. Usually, I'd take a scene like this one with Fuu and Mugen and incorporate it into my little shippy worldview of the characters.

But I don't get that feeling from this. Regardless of which one she has more of a crush on, I think she would have thrown herself in front of a sword for either of them, and it wouldn't have been romantic at all. It's just cause Fuu loves them both. Maybe or maybe not both platonically or romantically, but when someone's life is in danger love is love and Fuu's the kind of wonderful person that reacts this way for people she loves. So I'm squeeing "She threw herself in front of a sword for him!" because I love what it means for the whole picture, not just for Fuu and Mugen. For Fuu and Jin, too. And Mugen and Jin.

This is where they are: Jin willingly drawing the assassin away to protect Mugen and Fuu. Mugen hunting down Jin then avenging him. Fuu throwing herself in front of a sword for Mugen.

I'm sort of an OT3 fan yet not an OT3 fan, if that makes sense. I'm... a platonic/familial OT3 fan. I don't think they all should or would be sleeping together... but they make great companions.

you know... this episode is why Mugen is different from Spike. Spike had been loved. He knows what it is to love someone and be loved so much you'd risk your life for them and they for you. He'd had his textbook true love and was bitter about losing it.

Mugen's never had that. Even the girl he was in a relationship of sorts with back on that island wasn't like real love.

I've never really understood the fandom tendency to lump Mugen and Spike together just because they're both Watanabe creations. They have superficial similarities in attitude and flair, but...yeah. They're vastly different characters, and I love them in completely different ways.

And you're dead on about their experiences with love. Mugen's never had anybody. Even Spike had Vicious as almost a brother for a while in addition to Julia; Mugen didn't even like Mukuro (the Vicious-like pirate from the island), and while I think he came closest to loving Kohza (the pirate girl), he never really let down his guard enough to let her in. He's never really been loved (although I still think Kohza kinda did), and even more he's never really loved anybody.

Until now. And it scares him to death, and it's starting to crack him. Fuu and Jin are his family now, and the thought of losing that sense of family--in conjunction with having to kill Sara to protect them, when he's come to care about her, too--oh man, he's never ever shown that kind of emotion before (the way he runs off swearing to look for Jin, the way he screams at Fuu to stay away from danger). Scares him to death. Just contrast the scene at the end of 14 with the end of 21 (they use the same music!): in 14 he's expressionless, hardening like stone to keep from having to care even about being merciful; in 21 he's almost crying.

I am thinking/hoping/guessing that in some ways Champloo will have a more hopeful ending (for Mugen, at least) than Bebop did for Spike. Spike chose not to let go of his past; Mugen's choosing to let go of his, even if he's choosing against his will. I really need to make my bigass Mugen analysis post already...

(It is really sad that a scene with Mugen and Jin talking civilly to one another can make me cry.)

I haven't either. But haven't you made jokes about it and stuff? Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else and mixing you up.

Word.

What happened in episode 14 again? I deleted the episodes and only have 17-21 right now.

I agree. So far Champloo has strayed away from everything typical or classic, and Bebop embraced the classic tragedy scenario. I was really worried about Jin dying because SC does have that element of realism (like FMA) that makes me think they'd be willing to kill off a major character if it's a situation where a person would realistically die, but I've never thought that SC would end in tragedy. It's never really occured to me, though I saw it coming long before hand with CB. For Samurai Champloo...it just hasn't been set up that way.

I don't think it would be a necessarily happy ending either, but probably somewhere in the middle.

Forget the essay, girl! You need to be writing us some fanfiction! And not just my smutty request-- I'd love some SC angst from you.

I don't think I joked about Mugen and Spike being the same, unless I was talking about their superficial similarities. I could be wrong, though; I don't really remember, and I might've originally thought they were more alike than I've come to believe.

Episode 14 is the second half of the two-parter about Mugen's past growing up on the convict island and then as a pirate (and starts out with his gorgeous drowning/flashback sequence). He has the chance to kill Kohza at the end of the episode for betraying him, and instead just walks past her (as she begs him to kill her), managing to be both merciful and to leave her to a fate he knows is worse than death for her: being alone.

I think Jin is more likely to die than Mugen, now. It will still break my heart if he does. I think Mugen's job is to keep living, for the sake of others if not for his own--now that he's actually living, and not just surviving.

I actually decided that the perfect scenario for your smut ficlet was in this episode, with injured Mugen and Fuu together, Fuu saying, "If you went away too, I--" and Mugen admitting "I might really die this time." They're together, alone, emotionally vulnerable, and have just basically admitted that they love each other (in whatever way you interpret that)--aaand the episode cuts away and doesn't come back. You could totally fit a missing scene first-time sleeping-together story. I don't wanna do it though, 'cause A)this ep is still making me hurt, B)I don't write smut anyway, and C)the thought of Mugen having sex with that giant slash across his lower torso is making me go oww, oww, OWW, oww.

I have no real idea of how Champloo is going to end, and that is...really pleasantly surprising to me. It's going to be a different kind of unforeseen ending than FMA (I doubt Mugen will go to another dimension, for one thing...), but maybe just as compelling.
