Blade of the Immortal, volume 3
Apr. 6th, 2005 01:02 amI officially love this manga.
I'm not really into the gorey stuff, but the detail in the art is nice and the characters are wonderful. I love Rin and Manji and their constant back and forth friendship bickering. I love the way they have a relationship that's kind of sibling like and yet kinda not. It has all the comfort level and safety of a sibling relationship, yet has the potential for more. However, I can't say if there ever were to be more that I'd want it to happen any time soon. I like them with their relationship just the way it is, right now.
Every time I think Manji is a more interesting character, Rin surprises me and makes me like her more. Every time I think Rin is more interesting, Manji does/says something to make me like him more.
The whole thing is kinda like Samurai Champloo meets Kill Bill. Except I don't get frustrated with it the way I got frustrated with 2/3 of SC.
So far the side character of the ninja artist is my favorite. I love how he was trying to figure out his painting while there was a huge battle going on in his backyard. The overheard side-comments of Rin and Manji mid-fight in that whole scene were hilarious.
O-maki is turning out to be pretty interesting too, though.
octopedingenue, you were right-- Manji does look like Iruka. Like a mildly crazed, very harsh-spoken Iruka.
I need a few icons, but I feel too lazy to make them myself.

since Manji is AU!Iruka, I get to marry him, too.
Date: 2005-04-06 08:28 am (UTC)The ninja-artist guy comes back!
Funny not-really-but-well-sorta Champloo tie: the series' Japanese title is "Mugen no Juunin", which means something like "Inhabitant of Infinity".
I love this series. I'll be putting scanlations up through volume 15 all this week and next--and then I get to figure out how to download the newest scanlations via IRC.
Re: since Manji is AU!Iruka, I get to marry him, too.
Date: 2005-04-06 08:55 am (UTC)I was thinking Manji sort of reminds me of Iruka for his inner softie, Kakashi for his battle skill... and strangely, Naruto for his general demeanor. Like, if Naruto were to be all grown up and have all this bad stuff happen to him and generally a totally...different...person... okay, it's a weak similarity, but something about him reminds me of Naruto. Just his general attitude, his love of fighting and how he just takes people as they are.
And Anotsu and Magatsu are AU Neji and Kakashi, respectively.
I can see that. :) Though I think Anotsu is not really Neji so much as a combination of Neji, Sasuke, and Sakura. Weird combination, yeah, but that's what it seems like to me.
