Blade of the Immortal, volume 3
Apr. 6th, 2005 01:02 amI officially love this manga.
I'm not really into the gorey stuff, but the detail in the art is nice and the characters are wonderful. I love Rin and Manji and their constant back and forth friendship bickering. I love the way they have a relationship that's kind of sibling like and yet kinda not. It has all the comfort level and safety of a sibling relationship, yet has the potential for more. However, I can't say if there ever were to be more that I'd want it to happen any time soon. I like them with their relationship just the way it is, right now.
Every time I think Manji is a more interesting character, Rin surprises me and makes me like her more. Every time I think Rin is more interesting, Manji does/says something to make me like him more.
The whole thing is kinda like Samurai Champloo meets Kill Bill. Except I don't get frustrated with it the way I got frustrated with 2/3 of SC.
So far the side character of the ninja artist is my favorite. I love how he was trying to figure out his painting while there was a huge battle going on in his backyard. The overheard side-comments of Rin and Manji mid-fight in that whole scene were hilarious.
O-maki is turning out to be pretty interesting too, though.
octopedingenue, you were right-- Manji does look like Iruka. Like a mildly crazed, very harsh-spoken Iruka.
I need a few icons, but I feel too lazy to make them myself.

since Manji is AU!Iruka, I get to marry him, too.

Funny not-really-but-well-sorta Champloo tie: the series' Japanese title is "Mugen no Juunin", which means something like "Inhabitant of Infinity".
I love this series. I'll be putting scanlations up through volume 15 all this week and next--and then I get to figure out how to download the newest scanlations via IRC.

Date: 2005-04-06 08:36 am (UTC)Your icon STILL cracks me up. I'm three episodes into "Last Exile" and getting bored with it, but I feel like I wanna keep going just to meet the icon-guy. :D
Re: since Manji is AU!Iruka, I get to marry him, too.
Date: 2005-04-06 08:55 am (UTC)I was thinking Manji sort of reminds me of Iruka for his inner softie, Kakashi for his battle skill... and strangely, Naruto for his general demeanor. Like, if Naruto were to be all grown up and have all this bad stuff happen to him and generally a totally...different...person... okay, it's a weak similarity, but something about him reminds me of Naruto. Just his general attitude, his love of fighting and how he just takes people as they are.
And Anotsu and Magatsu are AU Neji and Kakashi, respectively.
I can see that. :) Though I think Anotsu is not really Neji so much as a combination of Neji, Sasuke, and Sakura. Weird combination, yeah, but that's what it seems like to me.

... and substitute pimp with "live" and I *know* that's some kind of anime quote but I can't remember where from.
...wait...it's coming to me... got it! Okay, I remember now. But I'll let you guess. :)

Dio! Yes. The beginning is boring. I had trouble paying attention to the first episode or two. I felt things started to pick up somewhat once Al (the little girl) was brought into the picture. By around episode 6 or 7 or so I was extremely fond of most of the characters. NOT including Dio, since at first he doesn't seem as cool as he really is.
But, yes...keep watching until you meet Dio. Really meet him. I think he's brought in around episode 6, but like I said what he's like in that episode isn't completely indicative of his personality. That doesn't start to become obvious until...Ah. Episode 9 or 10. Possibly 8 (I watched all those in like a big chunk and they bleed together in my head) But, Dio? Makes this series. At least, I think so. It wouldn't be nearly as watchable without him. He's wonderful and I adore him to bits. He and Luciola. If you aren't sucked by Dio and his adorableness, then yeah...the series probably isn't for you.
Mullin's a lot of fun, too. (He's called Moran in the fansubs) He kept me amused until the time Dio was introduced.
Er...Sorry, Rashaka, for cluttering up your comments with Last Exile babble. *cough*
