This is the first thing I saw him in, actually. I really wanted him to die at the end because he was such a weasel. But as a character I love to hate, he's way up there. Especially with repeat viewings.
Damn ... I remember watching Joaquin when he was still going by Leif Phoenix. In 1986 ... in Space Camp. Oh, and Russkies! I loved watching those over and over when I was a kid. Esp. Space Camp. I had this massive crush on Tate Donovan back in the day.
I don't remember where I first hear it, but I've always liked it. Maybe I'll use it in conversation today.
Best. Quote. Ever.
His delivery was just wonderful-- so deliciously insidious and softly evil. It took the normal villain's "ARGH! Why isn't my enemy dead/captured yet?!" reaction and just made it...better.
He's very talented. Have you seen him in Ladder 49? Kind of a corny fireman movie (for which I tend to have a weakness anyway) but he totally sold me emotionally in it. I never really cared for him before that, other than as a villian, but he made a great hero too.
He scares me in that movie. Particularly because from the first time I saw it he has reminded me of an ex-boyfriend. *shudder* Only in that role, though. The very next thing I saw him in was "Signs" and I fell entirely in love with him in that role, so I knew he was a fabulous and amazing actor. *G*
(For the record, he scares me in "Gladiator", but I like him very much in that role regardless.)
I'm kinda the same-- first saw him here, then saw Signs. First was freaked out, then loved him. Though all through the first hour of Signs I kept expecting him to turn evilly on one of the little kids or something.
