According to the SciFi channel's Stargate SG1 website's character profiles, the character played by Ben Browder in the new season already appeared in the end of season 7, Lost City.

I checked the episode summaries, and they didn't say anything about his character. So, my question is this: what do I need to know about his SG1 character when the new season premiers this Friday?

I'm assuming I can't just think of him as John Crichton. Though I want to. I WANT TO SO VERY VERY BADLY. ::clings desperately to Farscape love which will never never die::

Storywise, I'm more looking forward to Atlantis. But characterwise? SG1. I am loyal to my sci-fi series-jumping actors, yes I am.

He was the pilot who saved the SG-1 team in Antartica, according to TV Guide. I don't even think Browder played the character in that episode. Said they did that so SG-1's remaining team members would already know him and be more apt to accept him as their new leader.

Huh. Why isn't Sam the new leader?

Probably doesn't want the promotion. I missed the entire last season of Stargate, which I'll have to watch on DVD when it's released, so I'm just guessing. I don't doubt Sam could lead the team, I don't see her wanting the responsibility. She's more about the science aspect of herself than the military, I always thought.

I checked to make sure, and no, the character wasn't played by BB.

well, except for the part where she prefers to be adressed by her rank instead of "doctor", but otherwise i agree ;)

I've forgotten so much about SG-1 as a whole. I haven't watched any episodes in ... months. Nothing from earlier seasons in over a year. Sam always struck me to be more about her science than her military, but that's just my take on the character. :)

I've seen a lot of episodes, probably 2/3 of the total, but almost always out of order, and so I'm kinda like you-- my sense of characterization and canon is spotty and sort of whacked. I know most of the Big Bads and the main characters, but a lot of details I am fuzzy on. I do know I've seen the two-parter that ended last season, though, and I've seen a lot of last season, so I feel fine about watching the new episodes and knowing what's going on.

I didn't used to watch Stargate, but my dad starting getting the show season by season from Netflix and after that watching reruns. He "discovered" Stargate, to put it in fan terms, and since has subjected us to rerun overdose. I've never been a huge fan, but you see a show enough times and you kinda get into it. It'll never be on the level of Buffy or Farscape or The X Files in my mind... it's permanently stuck in the Sliders/Hercules/SeaQuest mediocrity trap. But it's better than crap like Charmed and I know I can count on it for easy entertainment most of the time.

I've watched almost all of Stargate Atlantis from the beginning, so I'm more knowledgable on their characters and storylines. I'm not crazy about that show either, but like I said: guarantee of easy watching and decent entertainment.

I would assume that distinction comes from the fact that she works in the military, not academia. Being called by her rank doesn't separate her from her peers the way being called "Doctor" would. Each title is suited to its environment.

Thanks for the thorough answer re: BB.

I guess it makes sense that Sam wouldn't be interested in leading-- she hasn't yet it seems. And I don't think I'd make Daniel leader, either. It also makes sense that they would want someone purely operations-trained as leader, instead of a scientist like Sam or Daniel. Since theirs is an operations unit.

You don't necessarily want your medicnin to also be your squad leader. ;)

Practically speaking, because the actress was off giving birth when they filmed the beginning of the season. :)
