My parents saw a picture and short article in the locla section of the newspaper last week about a cosplayer who won a contest at Anime Expo and the prize was a trip to Japan.

My mom asked me why I hadn't tried going to this convention if it was so nearby.

You should have seen my face. I almost cried. There was definite wibbling, anyway. I had to remind her that A) I had absolutely no funds at the time, and B) I don't know anyone in Southern California who likes anime and would go to the con with me, because all my friends I made so far down here are the exact opposite of anime people. Two of them are/were dating gamers/movie fans, which is kind of similar, but not similar enough to be able to get them to spend at least 150 dollars to get a hotel room and entry fee for an entire anime convention.

My mother nodded sympathetically and said there was always next year.

That didn't make me feel any better.

So... peeps on my friends list...

Anyone going to Anime Expo next year? Want someone to go with and split hotel room costs? I only require that you not be a serial predator and that you be willing to help me run away from particularly skeevy fanboys when necessary. I can promise the same.

Probably we would have gone with you. I don't really care either way about anime, but I imagine Jaime would have been interested. It's just in LA right?

yup. It's in LA. I live in Irvine, about 40 miles south of LA proper.

Enough time around me and I totally could take you from a passive fan to an addict.

We're about 40 miles east of LA, actually. I wouldn't get a hotel if we went though, I'd just drive.

I would drive, except that traffic to LA, parking in LA, and driving in LA is so horrible that I avoid it at all costs. Plus, if I wanted to go to all the days of the con, commuting each day is a real pain.

As of right now, I'm making plans to go. ACen this year was the first "big" con I went to, but I've a) always wanted to go to California and B) ANIME EXPO.

I would love to meet up/share room costs ... I don't know if I can convince any of my friends to go with me to this con. (Not that I've mentioned it to them yet, I have a feeling they're all going to go OMFG TOO EXPENSIVE!) It will be rather pricey, but, dude. Cross-country trip on my own? I'm *so* there! XD

Actually, it probably won't be too bad. You can take a 2 bed room and split it between 4 and 6 people (though the official number you tell the hotel people may differ from how many people actually stay there.) I don't know what the convention rates were for Anime Expo this year, but I went to Fanime Con last year and stayed in the adjoining hotel room with 3 people, and ending up paying about 100 for the weekend-- it was 99 bucks a night, for four nights.

That's the killer part. You've got to have enough people to bring the price down.

Right now I'm hoping I can go, but I probably won't know for certain until next year of course, a few months from the date.

California is cool. Though I'm partial to Northern California myself (lived there for the last 20 years aka my whole life), Southern California is better than no California. :D

Yeah, we had... eight people in our room for ACen. None of us really minded since we were all like "ooh, I'll sleep on the floor!"

I'm not so much worried about the hotel room cost as I am the plane ticket. :/ I've only flown twice in my life, and they both happened when I was *much* younger. But, we've got a whole year (or a little less than one) to plan this out. I'm not worried. :D

Well, we have a year to prepare! Hopefully you can save enough for the ticket. :)
