I know everyone and their sister knows about this by now, but... DUDE...
BEST.
WANK.
EVER.
The absolute bestest best.
One fic writer has the stupidity and audacity to ask for payment for fanfiction... and all of tv ficdom jumps on her throat.
That's solidarity, my friends. Who knew this is what it would take to make us all agree on something?
Though we be different, though we have wars great and small, though we ridicule one another and make stupid icons about it, when one of us decides toleave the coven betray the pack turn away from the teachings of all fic traditions lose sight of the mission make money off illegal copywrited property...
...We are as one.
::sings:: WE! ARE! FAMILY!
And as they say in Gungrave and the Godfather films... you don't. betray. the. family.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHA!
EDIT: on a more personal note-- well, acutally, I don't have a personal note. I didn't know cousinjean, though I do remember thinking her fic was pretty enjoyable and it's entirely probable I might have exchanged LJ comments with her at some point when I was more active in BTVS fandom. I don't think she's a bad person, but this is one instance where I am going to take all the pleasure possible and laugh at someone's pain. And fandom's pain. And all the pain. Because today I am just that shallow, and this is just that funny, and I thank my lucky stars I don't put that much emotional stock into much of ANYTHING I do online, because if I did, I'd have to take this all seriously.
In the end, we will all float on.
In the rain gutter. With Pennywise the Clown.
Goodnight!

Um. Ahem. I'll be over here. In the corner. Laughing for about FIVE years.

Date: 2005-08-11 11:46 pm (UTC)I meant "united" in so far as that a lot of people from varying different groups had a similar reaction, and the feeling/sentiment at the basis of most of the reactions seems to be the same no matter the source: negative reaction to the request for money, and apprehension over the precedent it might set (actually, that's something that hasn't really bothered me that much because I didn't think that even if she took and kept the money that it'd spark the kind of apocalyptic stuff some people are worried about.)
I have read both of those posts, though I didn't finish reading ginmar's-- I stopped due to a time constraint and haven't gotten around to going back and finishing it. I thought about commenting on yours, mostly to say that I respect your frustration with the magnitude of the negative reaction she's gotten, and that I appreciate your frustration in regard to this part--
just the sort of thing I railed against that bullying when it was directed at me for expressing a PERSONAL moral disgust in my OWN live journal over a issue that is triggering for me.
-- simply because I appreciate it when people use their journal for frustrations and don't take it out on other people's journals, and likewise I am saddened when expressing an opinion on a personal journal is treated as if it were expressed in a shared community. (Although the nature of ginmar's journalling style is different from the norm in the respect that it almost creates a community in and of itself, because she encourages reader response, actively participates in debate, and allows commenting by people she doesn't know even when she realizes that her opinions are regarded by some as something to argue with. She has, intentionally or otherwise, created her journal to be one that encourages a community of responses. By now she must expect the reactions she will get, neg and pos, because she's gone through a lot of it before. I both admire and am sometimes amazed by her capacity to take it all in and not just lock her entire LJ. Most of the rest of us aren't subjected to that kind of regular scrutiny.) I believe that you have no obligation or duty to anyone's thoughts and opinions on your journal than your own. This is also why I decided to post my feelings here as opposed to a community ((feelings which are still primarily amusement, because I have a significant enough distance from the person at the center that I don't feel the pull of loyalty there, and because I don't really agree with what she did [although mostly I don't care because I wasn't a co-author] I don't feel like I should defend her honor on the good-intentioned principal of what she tried to do either.))
I realize that in your opinion my being amused by this belittles the hurt feelings of the parties involved, primarily CJ, and that you don't approve of the collective smackdown behavior that fandom and f_w propogates or the laughing that comes along with it.
The next part is something a lot of people probably won't agree with, but I've decided this gradually over a period of years using the internet, and it's how I feel: The internet (and the feelings of those on the internet) can only hurt you as much as you allow it to. Yes, it is a real community with real social relationships-- hence why I am somewhat sad that you're defriending me over this-- but at the same time, you get what you give.
