I'm watching this Trigun AMV to the movie trailer audio of "Brokeback Mountain" (amv.org), and hearing Jake G.'s voice come out of Wolfwood's mouth is just cracking me up beyond words.

Speaking of anime...

I do not think the SDK anime would be better than the manga, and the manga gives me a headache even though I think I love it. But if you have access to files of the anime, I would definitely be interested in seeing it!

The anime is definitely worse the manga. Notably, although Yuya is more useless x 10,000, the anime script was pretty obviously written by Kyo/Yuya fans, so she becomes the useless damsel in distress the dangerous but secretly misunderstood! bad boy is always having to rescue. Grrr.

That said, I actually like the anime more than the manga. It's so terrible it's lovable. The historicism is so bad it's good. This is probably the worst anime I own, but I do own it.

Also, I second [livejournal.com profile] mswyrr's rec of Crest of the Stars TO THE NTH DEGREE. The only drawback is that the end of Crest of the Stars is not the end of the series, because it's sequeled by Banner of the Stars and Something Else of the Stars. But the main two characters are incredibly cute together, and their space-military society is well-realized.

Your double-rec is noted!

I am secretly a Kyo/Yuya fan, but Yuya being useless makes me want to hit people--my heart sank oh-so-low in my chest reading the SDK entry on Wikipedia that cheerfully informed me, "Such-and-such fight is the last time Yuya is a useful fighter in the series!" It does not help that I am attached to almost none of the supporting characters in the series, except maaaaybe Sasuke. Even Benitora, who should by rights be my favorite in the series just because of the kind of character he is, regularly makes me want to snap at him, "Stop squinting and don't leave your mouth hanging open like that OR BUGS WILL FLY IN IT!!"

But I really like Kyo and Yuya, so I facepalm when they are dumb. I like Kyoshiro most of the time, but when he does his Noble Pure Warrior For Peace schtick I want to smack him for some reason.

The SDK manga is just bad enough to irritate me without it being over-the-top awful enough to be delicious crack I can wallow in. It's got enough shonen tropes and character charms that ping me right to make me want to keep reading, but so much of the art and story development is handled awkwardly that it pulls me out of the story and makes me grumpy.

I have the first three episodes, but haven't watched them. I got them from fight club and I'm pretty sure someone there has more of them. Do you want me to upload the three that I have?

Yes, please! And I have scanlations of the first few volumes of manga, if you are interested in those.

I could easily see myself becoming totally obsessed with the SDK manga Back In The Day, especially if it were one of the first sword-fight-y manga that I'd read. But since I've seen what it does done better in series like "Bleach" and "Blade of the Immortal", most of its flaws get thrown into pretty sharp relief for me and it doesn't hold quite the same fascination for me as I know it once would have. Still, it's a nice solid shonen series that is entertaining and sometimes charming and that hits a lot of my bulletproof shonen kinks, and I really like two of the three main characters a lot, and as much as I make growly noises at it as I read I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the next volume at my local library. So hopefully the anime will be entertaining enough to make the wait less annoying. Does that work as a review / guarded rec?

I'll pass on the manga; usually I prefer anime unless there's a huge quality difference or it's far ahead (Naruto, FB). I'll get the eps I have up at some point soon-- probably in two weeks during Spring Break.
