Jun. 27th, 2004 05:53 pmYesterday I was in the Borders at Santana Row (the Bay Area's first attempt at an East-coast, New York shopping community that frankly leaves me feeling, "Oh, this would be quaint if it didn't have prices in the range of selling my firstborn for a pair of pants" and having a great desire to point them to the mega-commercialized mall down the street and say "This is how we do it in California. We do it big and commercialized and pants normally cost your second born child, not your first. Comprende?" now let me get back to the sentence I left hanging...), and browsing the manga shelf.
And I picked up, gasp, the first volume of Saiyuki. That thing
psychodragon82 is gaga over. I read the notes & character bios in the back, and admired the cover art, and turned it open and admired the several lush, colored pictures in the front. And I had one reaction:
This is porn!
This is porn, isn't it? Anime guy porn cleverly disguised as an action/adventure fantasy designed entirely to entice girls like me with its bishounen and its guns and its magic and its bishounen-who-use-guns-and-magic and fuck if I don't want to hand over 10 dollars for it right this minute.
I restrained myself. But it was a hard battle. And now I have more manga on my list in addition to Naruto and Fruits Basket. Dammit. I am never going to save money this way.

Jun. 27th, 2004 11:59 pmShakaMom: Look, it says "Inspired by Homer's The Illiad"
Rashaka: *giggle* Yeah, it would have have to.
( They had me for the first half. For the second...::facepalm:: )
I cut for spoiler content because the changes are so wild that even if you know the story inside and out it still constitutes spoilers. How about that?
It's not a *bad* movie. The production was gorgeous, and the acting strong. The cast was top-notch (minus Helen) and the cinematography was decent. It's probably alright to the uninitiated (which I assumed I was having only read the Oddysey and summaries of The Illiad, but even I knew enough to be facepalming the whole way through the second hour), but it's no Braveheart. It was unable to capture the passion of the audience. Or more precisely of me as an audience member. The whole thing just.... ::laugh:: I am not able to take it seriously.
And I'm normally pretty flexible about changes from book to film-- I thought the first two Harry Potter movies that I've seen didn't change enough. But this just became silly after a point.
"Inspired." ::snert::
