Bunji and Brandon are like the Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum of hitmen. Awesome.

...

He's going on a date with Sherry? As if Harry wasn't scary enough already. )

Gungrave 9:

I just realized that Harry's dub voice is the same as Lupin III's tv dub voice. That's weird.

Just watched last night's new Inu Yasha episode. I had missed the previous two, but that's okay.

Every time I watch this show and Kikyo shows up I get frustrated. I want to scream at all the characters: "WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO SAVE HER, SHE IS EVIL!! SHE EATS SOULS!"

And then I wonder if there's some mysterious reason for liking her that developed in one of the episodes I missed somewhere along the line. I get why IY still likes her and I understand that Kagome is way, way too generous when it comes to letting IY be happy. But why don't Miroku and Sango have more of a problem with Kikyo? SHE EATS SOULS!

Seriously, did that change when I wasn't looking?

This is a problem I've had with the IY plot ever since Kikyo's character was introduced. At first they were like "Oh poor IY, your ex is evil, sucks to be you, dude. We'll have to go find her and stop her before she eats more innocent people's souls."

And then they like...forgot.

And every time they meet up it's all about Inuyasha and Kikyo's lingering romantic history and not about the fact that SHE EATS SOULS!

If I were a young woman in IY's time period, and I knew there was a demoness out there consuming souls of the recently expired, I'd be less inclined to sympathize with Inu Yasha's romantic angst and more worried about the fact that my soul was going to be eaten by a demon. As defenders of the innocent and general do-gooders, IY's gang seems to be failing on that point.

If anyone has a nice and clean explanation for this, please tell me. I would love to know.

I was searching my computer for the notes for the Kabuto fic I was gonna write once upon a time (the notes seem to be totally gone), and ended up browsing some of my older fanfiction rejects. Like this two-page snippet from a long-ago-imagined Inu Yasha / Ranma 1/2 crossover.

Inuyasha only slammed Ranma’s head back into the packed dirt again, and leaned forward. “Kagome,” he hissed, “will not continue this engagement to YOU while she’s MY shard–detector.”

... I guess the context is that I wrote this like two years ago, and so IY is more abrasive and mean than he is in more recent timelines )

My parents saw a picture and short article in the locla section of the newspaper last week about a cosplayer who won a contest at Anime Expo and the prize was a trip to Japan.

My mom asked me why I hadn't tried going to this convention if it was so nearby.

You should have seen my face. I almost cried. There was definite wibbling, anyway. I had to remind her that A) I had absolutely no funds at the time, and B) I don't know anyone in Southern California who likes anime and would go to the con with me, because all my friends I made so far down here are the exact opposite of anime people. Two of them are/were dating gamers/movie fans, which is kind of similar, but not similar enough to be able to get them to spend at least 150 dollars to get a hotel room and entry fee for an entire anime convention.

My mother nodded sympathetically and said there was always next year.

That didn't make me feel any better.

So... peeps on my friends list...

Anyone going to Anime Expo next year? Want someone to go with and split hotel room costs? I only require that you not be a serial predator and that you be willing to help me run away from particularly skeevy fanboys when necessary. I can promise the same.

Adult Swim will be airing Neon Genesis Evangelion.
No air date has been determined as of yet.

Wow. I am... Wow. I never thought I'd see the day. I mean, given the actual story content of Evangelion.

Interesting.

Very...interesting. I guess after the sexually suggestive content of Samurai Champloo and Paranoia Agent and the blood and guts of Full Metal Alchemist... Eva actually doesn't come off as all that bad.

Evangelion is one of those shows that's overhyped for the most part, but still special and impressive in a way. It's not the best anime out there-- it's not even on my top ten list-- but it is cool and provocative and at certain times quite the headtrip. It's one of those anime series I recommend to people as "one of the anime series you should watch because it's a twisted classic of sorts, and because you'll be privy to a whole arsenal of otaku in-jokes if you do."

It's also the biggest anticlimax of any anime series I've ever seen.

If y'all thought FMA was coming to Adult Swim with too much hype, you're in for a surprise with Eva. Hype-wise, Eva is the ultimate "water-cooler discussion" anime. Hate it or love it, you'll definitely wanna talk about it afterward. And although it often gets lost in its own pretention and psychobabble to the expense of story and content, I will always give it credit for giving me the first moment of actually being scared -- as emotionally horrified and visually disturbed-- by an anime scene.* Evangelion is never shy when it comes to visceral imagery.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: As Rated By Rashaka

Character development: 9/10
Plot: 7/10
Music: 8/10
Overly Pretentious Use Of Symbolism: 10/10

Overall Score: 8/10

Pre-Show Hype Factor: Maximum. Be warned!

* Episode 18 I believe it was. That episode's battle... and how it ended...with... the screaming... and... the screaming. ...Still gives me the creeps.

EDIT: I forgot to say that I might not be watching it because I hate, loathe, and all-around despise the dub of Evangelion. Maybe if you start with the dub it's okay, but this is one of those shows where if you watch the whole thing in subbed, you absolutely cannot watch the dub afterward. It's intolerable.
