I wrote an essay about power, gender, and relationships for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

I had too many thoughts, and I wanted to get them out--and if you guys are game--discuss them. The anime plays with power roles fairly creatively and I find the possibilities of the show fascinating. Who loves whom, what form their love takes, and what powers the characters exert over themselves, each other, and the situation at large have all sorts of neat little facets that I just have to talk about, especially with a feminist bent. I would love it if you joined me.

Power, Worship, and Love: Haruhi, Kyon, and the SOS Brigade

That was... spiffy. That was badass. I loved that. I thought the infected woman did excellent acting, and there was medium-to-good acting by the rest of the cast, and the Doctor did some great acting. In fact, David Tennant has really been pulling his own weight with the acting this season. I've never been more pleased with him, and clearly they're giving him episode after episode of good material to work with. ::claps:: I love this!

I had a huge review & reactions post, but it got lost.

Overall, I loved it. This is the zaniest, whackiest Disney movie I've seen since Lilo & Stitch, though I think this one came out first.

Like everyone said, it was hilarious-- it was the funniest Disney feature I've seen, I think, for pure number of jokes crammed into an hour and a half. It was light-hearted, sweet, moral, and hilarious. I liked that there was no romance (except the awesomely awkward implied romance of Kronk and Ysme. "He's... what, late twenties?" / "...I'm not sure.") I liked that the main relationship of the film was friendship with a bit of a family/father-son vibe too. I liked the meso-american setting and the bright colors and the character designs. I liked all the actors and actresses. I liked all the characters. I liked the anachronistic jokes and the space mountain ride and Ysme's cat voice reaction and all the many, many jokes about cross-dressing, homo-erotic tension, older woman/younger man romances, and morality vs. selfishness. I liked Kronk's cooking, and his shoulder angel & devil. I liked Kuzko's happy oblivious nature and his joy of life. I liked Pacha as everyone's papa. I liked Ysme because she wasn't really THAT evil, just... disgruntled.

Like Tarzan, the music wasn't a big deal here. I thought the main number in the beginning was cleverly animated. Other than that, I barely noticed it.

I liked Kuzko's First Person POV (a narrative device that's so very fitting for his self-centered character), and the whole way the movie started. With the "memememeemmeememee!" I knew I was going to like it.

EDIT: Comments allowed now, sorry!

I've been playing in this mudpool for about an hour and a half. Damn my "girly" need to talk back and to point out irrationalities and to defend a logical argument against unwarranted dismissal!

Mr. Hanson, I think your bias is showing. Do try to zip up before TOO many people notice, hmm?

P.S. [livejournal.com profile] mswyrr, I love you and your "wishlist" that wasn't so terribly wishy.

[livejournal.com profile] irrel! [livejournal.com profile] yanocchi! Look at this awesome post I got from [livejournal.com profile] fadingembers. For potential SD Comic Con reasons, of course!

Now, I could not afford to buy all of those ingredients, but if you gals/guys (and who else we're hanging with) wanted to try at least one or two of the "nation" drinks, we could each bring something and by our spirits combined... ARTIFICIALLY INDUCED AVATAR STATE!

Yes, I find this idea way too amusing.

P.S. anyone on my flist who's going and wants to meet up, send me an email or sign below. No promises, but I'd love to meet more fans of any shared fandom, whether I'm active in it now or the past.
