Jul. 18th, 2003 12:51 pmI'm no Davis fan, but I swear if Arnold Swartz-his-face gets elected governor of my state, I might as well never read a newspaper again for at least 4 years.
Have we no pride left, my fellow Californians?

Date: 2003-07-18 01:22 pm (UTC)First off, Republican. I have issues right there.
Second, actor. I will always inherently mistrust him, because how can I know if he's telling the truth if he lies for a living? That's not to dismiss acting as a profession, because I think acting is a cool thing and very difficult, but when politics is a suspicious career to begin with, I'd rather not have it filled by someone whose spent a career tryign to convince people believe what isn't real.
Besides, who was the last actor we had as our Governor? Reagan.
Thirdly, he has no experience in a political office. He might have been active in the political part for many years, but he hasn't been a state legislator or been elected as a Congressman or been a mayor of any city. So he's popular, so what? That doesn't mean he knows what the hell he's doing. He hasn't even pick that wonderful of scripts this past few years in his own career.
Fourth, Republican. No amount of his smiling will change that fact. I'm mad enough at the Republicans at a a national level, I don't need them in charge here as well.

Date: 2003-07-18 01:55 pm (UTC)Well if it's any consolation, I don'tthink he is a very good actor. I mean his best role was playing a machine with no feelings!
Seriously though, I can see why you wouldn't want that guy anywhere near political power. But isn't being a Republician going to rather hinder him? Last time I checked, Calafornia was about as democratic a state as you could get!
Re:
Date: 2003-07-18 02:50 pm (UTC)Parts of Southern California, especially Orange County, are very Republican. To be honest California trades off. We're a bunch of liberals who switch political parts in leadership roles every few terms. Reagan was a Republican, as was Nixon, and they were both California governors. Lately California has been strognly Democratic in its elections, but backlash from Gray Davis might change that. I hope it doesn't, because I personally do not want to face voting for a Republican as my only option, and neither does anyone else, but if they start the recall it could happen.

Date: 2003-07-18 04:32 pm (UTC)He was a Republican. He was also an empty suit, mouthing what the party structure wanted him to -- and not doing that very well. My husband, who's a moderate Republican (one of the few left in captivity) refused to vote for him, saying he didn't vote for idiots just because they were in the same party.
He came out of the closet after he lost, btw.
Arnold's on everyone's list, but he seems to be very cagey about actually running this time. He's made comments that his calendar's cleared for 2006, but I think Republicans are desperately hoping he'll run now because he's one of the few choices they have that might actually appeal to a broad variety of people instead of the god-awful "it's more important they be true R*E*P*U*B*L*I*C*A*N*S than we get someone who might win and supports many of our goals" candidates they run.
Believe it or not, there are Republicans who wish someone would smack some sense into their party.

Date: 2003-07-18 04:45 pm (UTC)You know, I read an interesting graph in my political science text book (a 2002 book) that showed by percentages how the voting of delegates of certain topics differed from the opinions of their costituents of the same party, on the same subject. The graphshowed both parties, and it was enlightening to see how what you thought your guys were voting for differes from how they actually vote.
For instance... ::rummages through book until page found::
this says that in 2000 the percentage of republican voters who felt the government shoudl do more to regulate the environmental and safety practices of businesses was 37 %, where as the percentage of their elected delegates was 8%.
Also, for favoring child safety locks on guns it was 76% of rep. voters and only 48% delegates.

Why can't he live on a ranch in Montana like any other rich and snooty celebrity?
