I just added this to my list of LJ interests:

piratesofthecuhribbeannotcaeribbean

Because you know, everyone in that movie pronounces it the weird way. It's odd, because I do it too. If I'm talking about the place I tend to say "cuh-rib-be-an" but if I'm talking about the movie, I weirdly say "caer-i-be-an." I've decided this is weird, especially since I've heard other people do it too and I've seen some people mention it before.

Anyway, if someone else is interested in this, then it will get a nifty looking underline on our info pages, and become a link.

Thank you! I thought maybe I was the only one who thought that was weird. When the movie first came out, I tried to rebel and always pronounce it "cuh-rib-be-an" despite everyone else, but after awhile...after hearing everyone and their dog pronounce it "caer-i-be-an" over and over when talking about the movie, I started doing it, too. And it really is strange.

Anyway, I'll add it as an interest, too. ^_^

I think it's about the pattern of emphasis on the syllables: when you pronounce it "caeribbean" in the title of the movie, you're stressing every other syllable, which is the natural flow. In "cuhribbean" you'd have two unstressed syllables in a row, since the stress goes on the rib and not the "cuh."

PIrates OF the CAERibBEan vs. PIrates OF the cuhRIBean.

I am a dork. ;)

No, you're stressing every sillable with a heavy stress on the first, which is why it's the more awkward way. I find cuhribbean to be the more natural one, because it's said faster and smoother, with no emphasis on the first syllable.

When I am talking about the geograpical area, I say "Cuhribbean". When I am talking about the movie, I say "Caeribbean". I make this distinction because I am a poetry geek and "Caeribbean" flows better with "Pirates of the" because they're all trochees
PIrates OF the CAERiBEan

Though you could definitely make a case of how "of the" are not really trochaic but are really pyrrhic. But that's my rationale. :)

The way I remember the proper way to say "Caribbean" when I'm NOT talking abou the movie is remembering a Kermit the Frog doll that my sister owns and loves, which sings "I'm a Caribbean amphibian! I like to hop in the tropical seeea! Caribbean amphibian! Won't you sing along with meeeee! Won't you sing along with meeeeeee, ribbit ribbit!"

Dudette, you had me until pyrrhic. I never remember pyrrhic.

But you're right, when said as a whole phrase, it does flow better that way.

"I'm a Caribbean amphibian! I like to hop in the tropical seeea! Caribbean amphibian! Won't you sing along with meeeee! Won't you sing along with meeeeeee, ribbit ribbit!"

That sounds like a criminally cute and ridiculous toy. I want one now.
