You know you watch too much Law&Order:SVU when you take a nap and dream that Fruits Basket really takes place in New York and Detectives Benson and Stabler and Munch and Ice T raid the Sohma complex and arrest half the family for child abuse and neglect.

And the good is that they arrest Akito and Yuki's mom and Kyo's biological father and Momiji's mom-- but the bad is that they also take Hatori in on suspicion.

Then you wake up and think what a weird fanfic that would be, but wouldn't it be nice if it could actually happen cause god some of them ought to serve jail time.

One of the most frustrating things about FB was the way I kept thinking, "DIE! Go to PRISON! or DIE! Now!" at the nastier characters.

I think that pretty much every time we learn something new and insidious about Akito. Those words exactly.

I sometimes get this desire to write a really self-indulgent fic that basically goes:

"And one random Thursday the police raided the Sohma house and arrested Akito, who was then tried for assualt and child abuse and thrown in jail without parole. And Kazuma assumed subsitute leadership of the estate and power of attorney, and he made everything right, and everyone else lived happily ever after."

FB is on my list of "Things To Catch Up With/Give A Look" while on vacation.

I thought you tried it once and didn't like it?

I have to tell you, it's not actiony. But it is plotty and very charactery. And I love it. And I'm in love with two of the character and fondly worship several others. And then there's 2 or 3 or 5 that I'd like to see locked in prison for several years.

Actually, I'd recommend beginning with the anime. The anime covers the first 7 or 8 so volumes of the manga, with some events taken out of sequence, but done so in a way that improves them, I think. Going into the manga after the anime, you get a different experience but one enriched by watching the anime first. It has mostly scenes taken verbatim from the manga, but some in a different order and expanded upon to flow better, and a few original things that strengthen and develop some of the subplots. Now I'm getting into the later volumes, way past the end of the anime, and wowsers! It's good. I adore it. And in the last few days I've made several icons from the manga. Can't put them on my LJ because my computer doesn't connect anymore...GRRRRRR...but still, it's fun. Fruits Basket as a series has a real talent for being happy shiny people on the surface and then OMG SO MUCH FUCKING DIRT SWEPT UNDER THE RUG. I love how two-faced it is. But enough of my blather! Check it out. I could upload the anime for you sometime in august if you'd like.

Kinda judging by what I've read about the series, it doesn't seem like one I'd like. Then I thought the same thing about Angel Sanctuary and Fushigi Yugi, so I figured I'd give it a chance.

If you wanna upload some anime, I wouldn't turn it down!

well, I believe I still have all 26 fansubs episodes, so I could upload those for you after I move into my new apartment, in August. Some people in Fight Club could also probably upload it for you since several have downloaded it.

If you want a clue to how much I love this series-- I actually bought 3/4 DVDs and copied the the 4th one. I wanted to own the DVDs.

I know how a lot of people are skeptical of FB by reading reviews-- I didn't think I'd like it but tried it because I had open access to episodes at the time, and had nothing better to do. But I found it such a treat overall, and it's ranked in my top 10 favorite anime series ever, possibly in my top 5. That's probably unfair bias to give you to start... but oh well. FB is a drama-tragedy masquerading as a sitcom, and who knew that was something I'd end up not just liking, but loving. And what I'm enjoying about the manga as it progresses is that there's things that are being address in the volumes 9-15 that I'd thought about in the beginning, and had assumed would not be addressed. To my surprise, they ARE addressed, in very interesting ways sometimes. Things that appear glossed over or generalized only appear that way at first, and I love that feeling of surprised delight you get when you realize that the writer actually has thought about the same things you've thought about as you read, and does fully intend to deal with it. It's not your imagination afterall, it's very intentional. Sometimes I find character development and details in manga to be so superficial or overly generalized that I forget that it isn't necessarily a symptom of the medium at all, it might just be that I've gotten too used to lesser product.

I'm sure the ASPCA would be called in as well, and then wacky antics would ensue.

Please please write it for me!

Just imgine Akito sitting in the cell, whining and moping, until Elliot gets disgusted and decides to skip the formalities and just scare living crap out of Akito for fun, lifting him up by his shirt collar and swinging him around or something, meanwhile yelling in his face.

That's probably why any version I make would be no good-- all self-indulgent Akito character-bashing.
