Funniest. FMA. thing. ever..

A parody of the 4th opening credits. Not really spoilery, but not as funny if you haven't seen the last opening sequence.

My first attempt at Naruto fanart.

Haven't done fanart in a long time. What inspired me? My boring statistics class.

Since I didn't have any pictures of him on hand, I had to touch up his outfit later. And he actually ended up looking more "realistic" than "anime"... well except for the hair. He also looked older-- so I titled the picture "Naruto at 14."

You can find the head-to-toe sketch here :

And a close-up in colored pencil, here, which I think turned out rather well:

This is a close-up of just the head, the same picture as above, just blown up from the original sketch:

They might take a while to load, sorry.

Drawing Naruto's face was interesting, though. I ended up giving him a pixie-nose, because I think he kinda has one in the anime. I think it'll make him pretty cute later in life. Oddly, he ended up looking almost feminine to me in the final color version, though I really didn't intend it that way.

Profiles of faces are *the* hardest thing for me to draw. I'm amazed that this one turned out so well-- usually I can never make the forehead/nose/mouth/chin line up properly. Mouths especially.

Got it!

One of the people at the Adult Swim boards managed to find a link to the trailer for FMA on the Cartoon Network with the English dub! This is the one that was up on the official site for only a brief time before being taken down.

Considering it consists of the "prologue" for every episode and the second opening, I'm guessing that it's pulled exactly from how the episodes itself will air. I already knew that they were going to use the second opening for all the episodes (it has something to do with the band that sings "Ready Steady Go" 's legal contract), but I'm pleased to see the little prologue is going to be included. It's pretty important.

Al's English voice sounds young, thank god-- but his reading is a little stiff. Not quite as gentle as Al's character is. And it also doesn't have that regretful, hindsight-really-hurts-we-were-so-foolish-and-naive-back-then tone. Then again that's something that maybe I just projected onto it and is not actually what it sounds like to someone who speaks Japanese and is more familiar with tones and inflections.

Nevertheless, I have high hopes for this dub. High. Funimation has both pleased and disappointed me before when it comes to dubs, but I'm really hoping this one will be good.

I just got the best deal on anime EVER.

We had the vendor's fair on campus this week. And today I discovered the anime booth.

For just $84 dollars, I got:

The box set of director Hayao Miyazaki's seven most famous movies, including Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies... the last being one of the 3 in the set that I have not seen yet. I have no idea how much this normally costs.

and

The box set of season 2 of Fushigi Yuugi [The Mysterious Play], which normally costs between $175 and $200. You cannot imagine how long I've wanted this box set! I've been reluctant to fork over 200 for it, after already spending 200 cumulatively in buying season 1 on VHS, way back as a freshman and sophomore in high school. But I got it for $36! It was soooo tempting to fork over another $36 for the entire first season on DVD too, but I already have it on VHS so I took a stand and said "Self, have some restraint."

That's $ 84 total for two brand new, unopened dual-language box sets that would normally have cost me $ 250-300 if I bought them someplace like Suncoast or other movie stores.

And now I have FY season 2 (which I only got to see once 4-5 years ago, and if I remember correctly it might actually still have FMA beat in terms of bodycount), the better of the two FY seasons with the kick-ass finale *and* the first anime episode to ever make me cry, and I have THREE new Hayao Miyazaki movies to watch that I've never seen before.

Plus I saved fucking hella money.*

I am on a high.

* This is, by the way, the proper use of the slang word "hella" which, while sometimes can be used exaggeratingly as a synonym for "very" but MOST OF THE TIME means "many". Got that, Gwen Stephanie? If you actually grew up in Northern California using the word you would. But no. You had to steal it and sell it out to MTV. You bastardized our slang, damn you.

Can anyone explain Boogiepop Phantom to me?

I just watched the second episode with no context and never having seen the first.
